What is a Traditional Facelift surgery ?
Traditional Facelift surgery is a procedure used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and other telltale signs of aging, with the goal of improving the overall appearance of the upper, middle and lower face strutures, especially cheeks,chin edges and sagged neck. When performing this operation it is important to avoid exaggerated consequences considering the patient and the people around.
Candidates for this procedure
A facelift surgery can be performed in female and male patients over 50 years of age who have lost significant elasticity due to aging.
How is a traditional facelift surgery performed?
A traditional facelift procedure is performed through and incision starting in the hair or hairline above and in front of the ear. The incision is extended downward in front of the ear, comes under the ear and then upward behind the ear ending in the hair or hairline behind the ear. The skin and fatt tissues are then lifted off the underlying muscle and fascia as far forward as is necessary to correct the loose skin problem. The underlying muscle and fascia can be tightened with sutures if the surgeons feels it is necessary. The skin is pulled back and upward and the excess skin removed. The wound is then closed with sutures. Surgeon leavs a drain in the wounds to remove excess blood. This procedure can be combined with other procedures such as facial fat injections , upper eyelid , forehead and eyebrows lift surgeries. Duration of this procedure is 2.5-4 hours.
Whay should be considered before the operation?
For smokers it is recommended to stop smoking at least 2 weeks before the operation. Certain medications and nutritional supplements such aspirin, blood thinners and Vitamin E should be stopped at least ten days before the operation.
This operation is done under general anesthesia
Patient required to stay one night in the hospital after the operation. Patients will have bandages on theirs faces , and these bandages will be removed on the third day of the operation. Typically patients will return 5-7 days after the operation to have their stitches removed. Swelling and bruising should subside within 10-15 days. It may take 2-3 months for patients to see the final results of their face lifts.
Post op side effects
Facelift procedures are common and typically successful procedures. But like any surgery it can also cause temporal problems such as bleeding in the early stage post op. Some patients may need a long time for the swelling and numbness to go away. For such cases Lymphatic drainage massage is advised. It is common for the patients to experience a loss of sensation following their facelift operations. While this can be sign of nerve damage ,it can also be a passing side effect that should resolve itself within few months. Healing may take longer for some patients than for others. Short term skin discoloration , skin dryness , crusting around the incision sites and incisions that are slow to close are possible side effects especially for smokers
